🖉 T.O.A. Asian Fusion opening in Merrick

Life isn’t a straight line. Finding your dream career involves a lot of twists and turns, like a river. In my search for the perfect job, I find myself constantly changing course, because even though planning is helpful, the plans themselves are useless.

In past years, I’ve been through sailing, college consulting, and fashion design. And now I find myself eating my words from last year. Despite how much I hate New York, I’m thrilled to announce the upcoming opening of T.O.A. Asian FusionPlease forgive the slight RAS syndrome in the name. at 33 Sunrise Hwy, Merrick, NY 11566.

🖉 Starting a career in fashion design

A lot of you have been asking me what comes after my PhD. Continuing my post-OTIS entrepreneurial adventures (see BOATIS in 2023 and (EC)⁵ in 2024), I’m happy to announce the next chapter: I will be moving to Seoul later this year to start a career in fashion design!

New York would have been the obvious choice, except I hate New York, and I thought it might be good to spend some time out of the country. I’ll be chilling in the fashionable 한남동, sketching ideas for blazers (and calling it “gender-neutral epistemology” or whatever gets clicks). I haven’t decided on a name yet for my future brand, suggestions welcome.

Please buy my brand when it comes out!

Sketching.

🖉 The story of the AutoCarrot

1. Glazed carrots

Okay. Imagine you’re, like, trying to make glazed carrots or something.

Maybe a really simplified recipe looks something like:

  1. Cut your carrots into suitably sized pieces with a knife.
  2. Use a measuring spoon to get the right amount of oil, sugar, salt, etc.
  3. Throw the carrots and other ingredients into a frying pan.
  4. Serve the carrots on a plate.

You’ll notice that there were a bunch of different tools you used. The knife was used to cut the carrots into pieces. The measuring spoon was used to get the right amounts of other ingredients. And the plates are just there for the presentation of your dish. All these tools are things you see in any kitchen, but they do a single, completely unrelated thing.

Now imagine someone asks you:

I’m confused, why do people use a measuring spoon for cooking? Why not just use …

🖉 Announcing ⛵IS, the successor to OTIS

Time to set sail.
Time to set sail.

It’s with a sense of both sadness and excitement that I am writing to announce that year IX of my math olympiad training program, OTIS, is cancelled. Instead, it will be replaced by a new program that I am starting, named Boat Operations: A Tutorial In Sailing, or ⛵IS for short. This was a hard decision for me to make, but it’s been with me forever. I’ve been staring at the edge of the water long as I can remember, never really knowing why, and now it’s time to answer that calling.

Why sailing instead of math?

  1. Sailing is a more active and physical experience: Sailing involves being out on the water, feeling the wind and the waves, and physically maneuvering the boat. This can be a more engaging and immersive experience compared to sitting at a desk and working on math …
